  3. I know that I would be insulted and offended if there were anything BUT English…

  4. Absolutely not, they should not be in spanish as well. The United States official language is English. I guarantee that they wouldn’t even think about having the graduation in English if the school were in Mexico.

What else sovereign in this country are we going to allow to go to foreigners? We’re giving away everything that made us Americans. Come here, great. Learn the language, pay taxes and serve the country that’s serving you so much. Or did you forget the reason you are here to begin with!

  7. I totally disagree with this person’s complaint. We are behind Europe when it comes to speaking foreign languages. Everyone in California should be able to speak Spanish by now. Spanish is a beautiful language, and if the Principal gave the speech in both English and Spanish, he was trying to communicate well with everyone.

I think it is great.I am white and my husband is Spanish I want my sons grandparent also to understand my sons graduation.

  9. To make it mandatory is incorrect. The people are tired of being told what to do by a government out of control. It they are so smart why is this entire country going back into another recession? Nothing changes for us in Cali. 2015-2017 we will I hope see some major improvement. Prediction is unemployment under 9% by end of 2014.

Yes! Give the speech in English,Spanish and any other language you want Mr. Esquivel! It makes me proud as a bilingual to hear others not be afraid or intimidated to speak Spanish. I find it ignorant when people say this is America and Only English should be spoken. How about those people try to learn another language and experience the beauty of being able to speak two languages. I get paid more at work for being bilingual and let me tell I’m envied by others for that. My three daughters are second generation born Mexican-Americans and I speak to them in Spanish all the time and when I get those dirty looks in public I speak even louder. My 5 yr old is bilingual and I have the satisfaction knowing that she will be in higher demand and making more money than the kids with ignorant parents who think English is the only language for this Country. Wake up people embrace the different languages, cultures and stop being so sensitive.

No, he should give the speech in English. Our high school used to do the same thing. It took hours for the graduation ceremony!! Our school districts should not cater to other languages. If people want to live here they should speak the language. My grandmother came here from Italy not knowing a word of English. She went to school and within about 3 months she had a total grasp of the English language. No extra funding or textbooks or wasted tax dollars were used to cater to her and as a result she was better for it.

I work in a high school with a large culturally diverse student body. I think it is wonderful that the principal took the time to give his speech in English and Spanish.

I see nothing wrong with embracing the Latino/Hispanic community or any other culture that makes up a large part of our communities. It is by embracing each others cultural differences, acknowledging not converting, that we grow stronger as individuals and a nation. In our school we are working on finding the balance between the following cultures; Hispanic/Latino,Anglo American, Slavic, Asian, and African American. If the students can embrace each others cultures (differences), then as adults we should be able to do the same since we are supposed to be their role models.

Some things to remember; Mexico was here long before the first settler stepped foot on these shores, we are a nation built by many different cultural backgrounds, at one time we were 1 vote from being a German speaking nation.

  20. No, he should not give the commencement in Spanish. This is the United States of America, not Mexico. Contact the school board and let your thoughts be known, that is the way to change these actions. Otherwise, as the principal states, he plans to do the same thing again next year. Our federal government has allowed this invasion into our country by not enforcing our existing immigration laws. The result, California tax payers pay $16,000,000,000 a YEAR for benefits, bilingual education, services, incarceration — this does not count all of the lost jobs by the citizens of California. Our state is in serious financial difficulties, closing our state parks, cutting back on law enforcement and fire dept personnel, releasing prisoners early, laying off workers —- BUT, no cuts to the services to Illegal immigrants —- my tax dollars are being misdirected and now they want MORE. This is Not working for me, my family or my state. I understand that Governor Brown is also now interested in a new AMNESTY. WE ARE SERIOUSLY LOOKING TO MOVE FROM THIS STATE, TAKING OUR JOB SKILLS AND INCOME AND LOOKING FOR A US CITIZEN FRIENDLY STATE……….WE ARE FED UP.

Don’t be an idiot, that number is more than the gdp of the United States. You must be very happy that ignorance is free, otherwise your tax dollars would be twice as high!

Any speech made by a public official – government, schools etc. should be given in English. Especially a school, a place of LEARNING. It says a lot about the character of those who DO NOT WANT to learn the language of the country that they are living in and benefiting from. The person in the article says that he wanted to “make them feel comfortable”. Well, what about THEM making the people whom they live and benefit from feel comfortable and respected by LEARNING THE LANGUAGE! My great-grandparents and grandparents legally immigrated and gladly learned English. Why? Because this was their new home and their alliegence was to it and the people here, not back where they came FROM. They did not expect this country to cater to them or for the culture to be or become where they left. They came to America to be AMERICANS.

NO! Only one language in this country matters: ENGLISH! You cannot and should not cater to one set of race only.

  30. English or Spanish or Both!! You have to be kidding? English is the ‘norm’ for the land we are living in! If you interpret in Spanish then what about all the other people out in the audience who have other ethnicities? Rediculous!!

I am of Hispanic heretish and all my relatives learned the language of the land we live in! It is the chosen language of this country (ask the Indians, they are the only natives of this country)! English speaking people made this country and when others chose to come here, they knew this!!

  32. Principal giving the same speech in two languages standing on ground in one country? I think he was just showing off. How can he be a teacher if he has no understanding of what conditions motivate human beings to learn?

  33. Wake up people.. look at the real drive behind this issue! Illgeal immigrants who are refusing to learn the language and those who want to pander to them are pushing spanish as a second language. Look at history, look at the other nationalities who have immigrated to the US over the years. I am a proud son of a son of immigrants who came from Italy. My grandparents learned the language … maintained their heritage, contributed to society, and now italian heritage and some customs are part of the american “melting pot”. They did not ‘demand’ to be accepted, they just were.

  34. Should the schools in the Mexican State of Chihuahua have commencement speeches in English…..dumb masses….

No. This is how it started in Canada. It cost Canada billions and you can’t get a job in a civil service position unless you are bilingual. Other cultures exist just fine within English America. Why should Spanish be an exception. By the way, I’m a Canadian immigrant who is disgusted with what has happened in Canada.

  37. My mother always said: learn the law and language of the country you want to live in or go back where you came from.

The answer is NO. The U.S. is behind the times as even though it is a counrty of immigrants the sole OFFICIAL Recognized language should English. Like in Germany all immigrants have to learn how to read/write German (Official Language), same goes for France, same goes for China and a whole slew of other countries. There is nothing saying that the immigrants/residents can speak or learn their native tongue, but the bottom line is that they must learn the language of the country they live in. Even in Germany there is very few business’s that are not in German unless they cater to a specific ethnic clientel then they use that language as a second to the Official one. MAKE ENGLISH THE OFFICIAL/PRIMARY LANGUAGE!

  39. NO! The official language of the United States, even California and Nevada, is English. Illegal immigration has destroyed California and threatens to engulf the entire nation. These people have nothing but contempt for our American values, principles, and language!

  41. Hell no. We aren’t telling schools in Central or South America to have their commencements in English! Parents are supposed to be functional in English as a condition of citizenship with exceptions only for those over 65. The fact that they can’t understand English is probably a combination of self-imposed isolation or the fact that they are here illegally. Their kids are bilingual, they should be too.

  42. No!!! My father came over to America by ship in the 1920′s. He went to night school to learn the language and used it exclusively. No one learned Swedish to accomidate him, nor did he expect them to. This is America. WE SPEAK ENGLISH HERE!

  43. NO! THIS IS AMERICA AND WE SPEEK ENGLISH!

  44. Not just ‘no’, but ‘HELL NO!’.

  47. Hell NO Speak ENGLISH

  48. ENGLISH!!!!! Its what we do.

  49. No. Where in the Constitution, Bill of Rights or any other basis of law demand that no one is offended? I am offended having to live in a multi-cultural country. As a melting pot all should come together AS AMERICANS.

  50. If he was going to do this so no one felt left out, he should have done the speech in every language. According to California’s Consititution, Article III, The official launguage in California is “English”.
