California's Central Valley Impacted By Major Drought
California's Central Valley Impacted By Major Drought
BAKERSFIELD, CA - FEBRUARY 6: A dog hangs around an abandoned farmhouse on February 6, 2014 near Bakersfield, California. Now in its third straight year of unprecedented drought, California is experiencing its driest year on record, dating back 119 years and possible the worst in the past 500 years. Grasslands that support cattle have dried up, forcing ranchers to feed them expensive supplemental hay to keep them from starving or to sell at least some of their herds, and farmers are struggling with diminishing crop water and whether to plant or to tear out permanent crops which use water year-round like almond trees. About 17 rural communities could run out of drinking water within several weeks and politicians are pushing to undo laws that protect several endangered species. (Photo by David McNew/Getty Images)

THE COUNCIL Pitch First Fundraiser for NonprofitsThe Council – A local all male organization aiming to help local charities on a quarterly basis was on April 26th at House Kitchen and Bar,downtown Sacramento. The concept: The Council is comprised of 100 men who agree to each donate $100 at four gatherings a year. At each gathering, the men will hear pitches from three local non-profits. At the end of the pitches, the men will vote by silent ballot for whichever non-profit they felt gave the best presentation. Whichever non-profit receives the most votes will walk away with $10,000 for its organization. Checks will be made out by each individual on-site and will be given directly to the charity. Each $100 donation is tax deductible. Founding members; Dave Harmon, Patrick Harbison, Greg Wellman, David Sobon, Cory Harris, Tim Harris and Shelby Elias Networking: The Council is envisioned to be a wonderful opportunity from men across various professional sectors to network and mingle. The goal is to provide long-term value to deserving causes - but also to have fun and create a socially and professionally viable atmosphere as well.
