GRANITE BAY (CBS13) – Dozens waiting in line for a chance to get free food at Chick-fil-A, but the first customer won’t even be served until tomorrow.

It’s got that Black Friday feel out here with tents and coolers and chairs for people all waiting for a tasty treat. More than 100 people set up camp at the new Granite Bay Chick-fil-A.

“it’s crazy,” said Natalie Woodmass, a Chick-fil-A customer.

People starting lining up in the dark.

“It’s fun, it’s free food for a year,” said Darek Daszynsky.

The first 100 people in line got the food, and for some, this isn’t they’re first rodeo at a Chick-fil-A grand opening.

“I went to Utah twice, I’ve been to L.A., I’ve been to Fresno, Bakersfield, so I’ve gone all over – Fairfield,” said Diane Terry, a Chick-fil-A customer.

This restaurant on the corner of Douglas and Sierra College Boulevards in Granite Bay means jobs.

“We have employed over 50 employees at this location, and we’re so excited to be able to do that,” said Hollee Swain, Chick-fil-A event planner.

And so are the people waiting in line.

“There needs to be more new jobs,” said Woodmass. “It brings more business and more employment opportunities.”

So far this year, five Chick-fil-A restaurants have opened up in California, bringing nearly 400 jobs to the state.

“It’s better than being at home and being lazy, I can tell you that much,” said Daszynsky. “It’s good to be out with the community.”

The official grand opening takes place on Thursday. All of the 100 vouchers have already been given out.

NEW YORK (AP) — Whole Foods says all products in its North American stores will have labels disclosing if they contain genetically modified ingredients by 2018.

The company says it’s the first national grocery chain to set such a deadline for labeling foods that contain genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. A spokeswoman for Whole Foods said organic foods will not have to carry the labels since they do not contain GMOs by definition. Although Whole Foods is known as an organic grocer, it also sells a wide array of non-organic products.

Whole Foods Market Inc. notes that it has been working with suppliers for years to source products that don’t have GMO ingredients. It says it currently sells more than 3,000 products have gone through the non-GMO verification process, more than any other retailer in North America.

The use of GMOs has been a growing issue in recent years, with health advocates pushing for mandatory labeling. Last year, California voters shot down an initiative that would have required such labels. As various efforts continue for GMO labeling, Whole Foods said it would move ahead with its own plans.

A spokeswoman for Whole Foods noted that its stores in the United Kingdom already have GMO labeling, in compliance with national regulations.

Walter Robb, co-CEO of Whole Foods, said the issue was about “the consumer’s right to know.”

Patty Lovera of Food and Water Watch, a consumer and environmental advocacy group, called the Whole Foods announcement a “smart move.” Her group and others have been pushing for a federal law requiring labeling on all genetically modified foods.

“We’re continuing to work to make this label mandatory because everyone deserves to have that label, not just Whole Food shoppers,” Lovera said. “But I think it’s smart on their part to start giving consumers what they want, which is more information.”

Scott Ian is no stranger to the GRAMMY Awards. His band Anthrax have been nominated three times in the Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance category since its introduction in 1990. This year they’ve garnered their fourth, nod for the song “I’m Alive,” from the band’s excellent 2011 album Worship Music.

The nomination comes at a time of renewed vitality for the veteran thrash metal act, following a reunion with ’80s era vocalist Joey Belladonna and a triumphant stint alongside fellow thrash pioneers Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth for a globetrotting series of stadium-shaking Big Four concerts. They also have a new EP of cover songs, titled Anthems, set for release, as well as a planned spring U.S. tour on which they will be performing their classic 1987 album, Among the Living, in full.

But first, there are the GRAMMYs on February 10 at L.A.’s Staples Center. Though Ian and Anthrax have been here before (and were twice bested by Metallica; once by Soundgarden), they have another shot this year.

In addition to his duties as rhythm guitarist and songwriter for Anthrax, Ian is also an avowed foodie. For several years he had an online music and food column and is known to pal around with famed restaurateur, vintner and Mario Batali business partner Joe Bastianich. Radio.com asked the guitarist, a New Yorker by birth but who has for years called L.A. home, to recommend five must-visit restaurants for anyone making their way to the City of Angels for the awards ceremony.

Ian’s answers traversed several cuisines and price points: Beverly Hills sushi temple Matsuhisa; Michael Cimarusti’s Michelin-starred seafood eatery Providence; the inventive farm-to-table spot Cook’s County; and L.A. mainstay the Apple Pan, which is known for its hamburgers and, not coincidentally, a killer apple pie. Explains the guitarist of his varied choices, “They’re all the best at what they do. Trust me.”

Ian also included one Bastianich/Batali operation, the lauded Osteria Mozza, in his picks, and added another, Pizzeria Mozza, as his restaurant of choice if Anthrax were to win the Grammy for “I’m Alive.” “I’d be in the Jack Warner room at Mozza,” he says, adding that his ideal celebratory meal there would include “Charcuterie, fennel sausage pizza, butterscotch budino and then a lot of Amaro to finish it off.”

As for what he would be drinking to mark the occasion?

“Vintage Champagne or a shot of whiskey,” he says. “Or even better: both.”

Richard Bienstock, Radio.com

If you get children interested in food preparation early on, they are more likely to enjoy eating healthy for the rest of their lives. There are many simple recipes that kids can make with you, In addition to learning a valuable skill in a fun way, cooking is a great opportunity to spend time together and form some wonderful memories. Chef George Karyszyn of Sacramento’s Uptown Café has seen the positive effects of this with his daughter, who spent a lot of time at the restaurant growing up.

First-time visitors to the small and decidedly unsophisticated Uptown Café may not expect haute cuisine, but owner and chef George Karyszyn knows his way around a kitchen, and then some. After receiving his culinary training in Europe, Karyszyn worked in fine restaurants all over the world. The Chicago native visited Washington, DC in 1981, where he prepared abalone bisque for Ronald Reagan’s presidential inauguration. After retiring, Karyszyn moved to Sacramento and opened the quirky Uptown Café.

Locals flock to Uptown for breakfast and lunch, sampling everything from meatloaf, southern fried catfish and the world’s fluffiest pancakes to chicken cordon bleu and a crab benedict covered in pesto hollandaise sauce.

Karyszyn’s wife works with him at Uptown, and he says their daughter grew up in the restaurant. She still comes in and helps out on weekends. Getting hands-on experience at her parents’ sides has brought her a life-long appreciation both for her parents and for food.

Breakfast: Tropical Crunch Morning Wraps

Get the morning started off right with a good breakfast. Even young children can help make Tropical Crunch Morning Wraps using a halved banana on fresh tortillas. Drizzle with blended honey and peanut butter, and then let the kids sprinkle on shredded coconut, granola, minced pineapple, etc. Roll up the tortillas and cut into easy-to-manage chunks.

Lunch: My Own Pizzeria Muffins

Help children stay focused and energetic all afternoon with My Own Pizzeria Muffins, a quick and easy lunch packed with protein and veggies. Split English muffins open and spread a dab of canned pizza sauce on each. Let the kids customize their own pizza by adding their own toppings, such as pre-sliced ham or pepperoni, onions, green or red peppers, mushrooms or other vegetables. Sprinkle on some shredded mozzarella and bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for seven to 10 minutes. Feeling adventurous? Use a dab of leftover pizza sauce to draw Italian pizza-maker mustaches on the young chefs.

Dinner: Box of Crayons Dinner Salad

Karyszyn knows that fresh ingredients are a critical part of making food that is tasty and visually appealing. Letting the kids help shop for ingredients can be fun. Visit one of the certified farmer’s markets open all year round in Sacramento (click here for locations and times) to make a Box of Crayons Dinner Salad. Start with lettuce and let the youngsters add chopped vegetables in all colors of the rainbow, such as bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, zucchini/squash, chilis, radishes, celery and pea pods. Chopped fruit can make the salad even better, so let the kids add apples, pears, raisins, berries, kiwi, orange slices, sunflower seeds, nuts or dried cranberries. Top with a squeeze of lemon and a small amount of prepared salad dressing or salsa. Chunks of cheese, tuna or chicken can also be added to up the protein in the meal.
