MLS has planned to expand to 24 teams by 2020, and only two spots remained going into this year—one had already been promised to David Beckham’s ownership group in Miami, despite their issues trying to land a stadium deal.
Mayor Carolyn Goodman received a letter from MLS Commissioner Don Garber saying the city would not be considered, because of ” uncertainty as to when we might be able to move forward.” As a result, the city says its $200 million stadium proposal is dead.

At Sacramento’s State of the City address on Thursday, Mayor Kevin Johnson introduced San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York as the latest investor in the USL Pro champion team. That came a day after Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadive announced he would be investing in the team as well.
During Thursday night’s State of the City speech, San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York was introduced as a new investor in the USL Pro team. The announcement comes one day after Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadive announced he was joining the team’s ownership group.
Vivek Ranadive will not become a majority owner in the USL Pro team, but he and the Kings are investing in the Republic in its bid to become a Major League Soccer franchise.
The move sends a message to Major League Soccer, which is considering Sacramento among three potential cities for an expansion team. Two groups from Minnesota and one from Las Vegas are also in the running.
Don Garber revealed that deciding whether to expand to Sacramento, Minneapolis, or Las Vegas will need extra time, though it will be discussed at Saturday’s Board of Governors meeting.
The proposal was first made in May. A vote has been postponed several times, with council members balking at using public money.
Garber has said MLS will expand to 24 teams before the end of the decade, and his expansion committee is to speak with owners this weekend regarding overtures from Minneapolis, Sacramento and Las Vegas.
