Best Movies Set in the Sacramento Area

With its varied landscape, the Sacramento area has served as the backdrop for some major Hollywood films. Here is a list of some you may have seen.

Pink Cadillac

This 1989 action-comedy starring Clint Eastwood and Bernadette Peters was filmed in Sacramento at 9th Street and Capitol Mall.

Frankie and Johnnie

Featuring Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer, portions of this 1991 love story were shot in Sacramento and Folsom.

Life

Parts set in the Mississippi shanty town were really shot in Locke, and scenes of the chain gang were shot in fields in West Sacramento. The 1999 comedy starred Martin Lawrence, Eddie Murphy and Bernie Mac.

Phenomenon

A big portion of this movie, which starred John Travolta and Kyra Sedgwick, was shot in Auburn. You'll recognize the courthouse, and may have saddled up to the bar used in the film a time or two. It was also shot in a city park, an apple orchard and a lawyer's office.

Almost Famous

The scene where the Stillwater Band is driving by bus down a Midwest highway was actually filmed in Lincoln. A barn with writing on the roof was created for the movie. It stars Kate Hudson.

Breakdown

This 1997 thriller starring Kurt Russell was set in Auburn, Cool, Newcastle and Sacramento.

Misery

The opening scene of this creepy Stephen King adaptation in which James Caan drives his Mustang off the snowy road, was set near Donner Pass and I-80 in Placer County.

Smokin' Aces

Lake Tahoe was the unmistakable backdrop of this star-studded film written and directed by local filmmaker Joe Carnahan. It also stars Wayne Newton, so right there, you know it's good.
