Best Museum Exhibits To See This Fall In Sacramento

A day at the museum is a great way to enjoy Sacramento and learn something new. Sacramento's museums showcase everything from fine art to Sacramento and California history. This fall, these special exhibits bring art, artifacts and photos from around the globe to our region - landscape drawings from Europe, artwork from Nepal and relics of the Girl Scouts of America. Or celebrate the rich history of railroad at the Sacramento History Museum and the California Railroad Museum. But don't wait - these exhibits are on display for a limited time.

"The Artist's View: Landscape Drawings"

"The Artist's View" will celebrate the beauty of landscape drawings by diverse artists from major European schools. The collection spans four centuries, from 17th-century Dutch and Flemish drawings to 19th-century France. A highlight of the collection is works from 18th- and 19th-century Germany. The drawings from the Crocker Art Museum collection feature works from Herman van Swanevelt, Camille Corot and Anthonie van Waterloo.

"The Girl Scout Promise: 100 Years of Girl Scouting in California"

Current and former Girl Scouts won't want to miss this special exhibit at the California Museum, which celebrates the centennial of the organization. Founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low, the Girl Scouts are committed to helping girls realize their full potential. The exhibit chronicles the organization's history and accomplishments over the last century. Developed by the Girl Scouts Heart of Central California with assistance from former Girl Scouts at the Crocker Art Museum and the California Museum, the collection highlights personal stories of notable members and rare artifacts such as vintage uniforms, badges, books and photographs.

"Celestial Realms: The Art of Nepal from California Collections"

Also coming to the Crocker Art Museum this fall is the unique and diverse artwork of the Newar people. The inhabitants of Nepal's Kathmandu Valley are skilled artisans, with their work influencing Tibetan and Chinese artists. The collection will showcase paintings, ritual objects and stone, wood and bronze sculptures from private California collections and the Crocker Art Museum. Accompanying the collection will be a 40-page catalog and essay by scholars Nancy Tingley, Ph.D. and Nutandhar Sharma.

Built in 1912, Sacramento's iconic I Street Bridge was an engineering accomplishment by Southern Pacific Railroad. The first train crossed the bridge on April 29, 1912 and trains continue to travel across it today. In honor of the bridge's 100th anniversary, the Sacramento History Museum will showcase a special collection of photographs. The community is invited to visit the museum and learn about the history of the local landmark.

Hop aboard and see how the on-board experience changed over time at the California Railroad Museum's "Ticket To Ride" exhibit. Visitors can view different types of passenger seating from the 1870s through the present, vintage train tickets and amenities from different eras and traveling classes. Also on display are early travel comforts such as a 20th-century barber chair, a 1930's bar, light fixtures, china and decorated leaded glass. Don't miss this opportunity to see how "innovations in comfort, design and technology" helped meet changing customer expectations.
