Summer in Sacramento is perfect for barbecues, picnics in the park, waterskiing and lazy days by the pool, but it is not as wonderful for your hair. High temperatures, strong sunlight, chlorine, air conditioning and environmental pollutants can cause hair to become dry, frizzy and downright unruly. Some local beauty salons offer keratin treatments as a solution for straightening and taming your mane this summer.

Salon Entro
621 Capitol Mall, Suite 120
Sacramento, CA 95814

Salon Entro offers a chemical-free keratin treatment that lasts four to five months. The service costs around $300, depending upon the amount of product that is needed for the thickness of the client’s hair. Owner and technician Aaleahya Simmons says there is often confusion about chemical treatments; Salon Entro does not do Brazilian Blowouts, which use formaldehyde. “Keratin treatments use nutrients and heat, a process which causes a chemical reaction. But the product is so safe you could eat it,” Simmons explains. A keratin “mini blowout” is available for $45. It does not straighten hair but provides short-term smoothing to hair.

JANE offers a variety of services and the menu reflects a sensitivity to customers’ concerns about chemicals. The normal treatment, known as a “keratin blowout,” is available in the $200 range, but a version done without formaldehyde is possible for just a bit more. In addition, hair color and highlighting can be done in the traditional way or without using products containing ammonia. JANE is open seven days a week and the website often features sale and pre-purchase specials on keratin services.

The salon has several different keratin treatment formulas available, depending on the texture, thickness and level of damage of the client’s hair. The process takes a minimum of two hours and the benefits typically last three to five months, according to Smentek.
