The jewel in the crown of Sacramento's park system is the dog-friendly American River Parkway, a greenbelt anchored by a paved, multi-use trail that meanders 32 miles from the Old Sacramento historic district to sprawling Folsom Lake State Recreation Area. There are many points of entry along the way, but first-time visitors gravitate to Old Sacramento, a 28-acre national historic district between Interstate-5 and the Sacramento River. Rover is welcome to check out the vintage railroad equipment outside the California State Railroad Museum or lounge at a variety of food stalls with patio seating. Dogs are also allowed on carriage rides. It's a three-mile scenic stroll from Old Sac to Discovery Park, where the Sacramento and American rivers converge. On the way back you'll be treated to views of the city skyline as well as the rolling river. Or, lead Fido across the iconic Tower Bridge and sniff out views from across the water.
