Best Rum Cocktails In Sacramento

If there's one thing we know, it's our rum. And while we are big advocates of not watering down good liquor, we can't deny that Sacramento has some of the best rum cocktails available. After some extensive research, we've narrowed it down to our five favorite rum drinks available.
Oshima Sushi Fugu Lounge
2071 Natomas Crossing Drive
Sacramento, CA 95834
(916) 515-1958

While a sushi restaurant may not be the first thing you think of when you think of rum, Oshima has one of the best rum drinks out there: the Sailor King. Made with Sailor Jerry, Malibu, orange juice, pineapple juice and topped with grenadine and 151, the Sailor King is similar to a Mai Tai, but a lot sweeter and stronger. A word of caution though, this drink is a sniper, so take caution.

Grange Restaurant & Bar
926 J St.
Sacramento, CA 95814
(916) 492-4450
www.grangesacramento.com

The Grange is known for having a variety of delicious and creative drinks, including Tusk, a bacon and bourbon drink. However, it also has an incredible Strawberry Mai Tai on its menu. In fact, the Grange is so confident in this drink, that it has decided to share it:

  • 1.5 oz Diplomatico rum (or aged rum)
  • .5 oz flor de cana silver (or good silver rum)
  • .5 oz house orange curaçao (Cointreau works also)
  • 1 oz Small Hands orgeat syrup *
  • .75 oz lime
  • 1 whole strawberry

Muddle the strawberry and then add everything else with ice. Shake hard. Fine strain over an ice-filled bucket glass. Garnish with strawberry slices and almond slices. Then drink! * Small hands orgeat is an almond syrup made from California almonds.

Hook & Ladder Manufacturing Co.
1630 S St.
Sacramento, CA 95811
(916) 442-4885
www.hookandladder916.com

Hook & Ladder has your rum needs covered whether it's morning or night. For brunch, order the Turbonegro, a house-made rum-based coffee liqueur combined with Nitro Coffee, Vanilla-Angostura whipped cream and Mexican chocolate. For dinner, try the Parish Punch, which is a mixture of Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum, curaçao, orange juice, lime juice, orgeat, vanilla-infused Angostura bitters and mint.

The Shady Lady Saloon
1409 R St.
Sacramento, CA 95811
(916) 231-9121
www.shadyladybar.com

At The Shady Lady, all of the ginger ale, tonic and cola are made in house. That specialized touch makes its classic drinks, like the Planter's Punch, heads above the rest. However, if you are someone who wants a classic without a lot of fuss, try the Dark and Stormy, which is a mix of ginger beer and rum. It's refreshing, delicious and always classy.
The Virgin Sturgeon
1577 Garden Highway
Sacramento, CA 95833
(916) 921-2694

The Virgin Sturgeon is an experience, between its amazing view, floating bar and airport terminal entrance. However, what really sets it apart is its bartenders. While The Virgin Sturgeon might not have a menu full of crafted cocktails, what it does offer are some of the best tasting (and heavily poured) classics around. If you are looking for a little fruit with your rum, try the Pina Colada, which is somehow much tastier than every other version in town. If you're feeling dangerous, try the Long Island Iced Tea, which should be served with a card for the nearest taxi service, because you won't be driving anywhere.
