Sacramento is a hotbed for races, whether they be for casual or competitive purposes. Additionally, you can also find races that are for charities and some that are just for a good time. The Wounded Veteran Run was created in 2011 to honor wounded veterans and is held each year on Memorial Day. The 2016 run will be held on May 30, and features a 10K, 5K and 3K run/walk and a Kids Fun Run. This event has become a wonderful holiday tradition and is a chance to raise money and awareness for the wounded vets. Opening ceremonies begin at 8:15 a.m. at Vista Del Lago High School in Folsom, California.

The Sacramento International Triathlon takes place on June 12 in Discovery Park. The event will be a USAT sanctioned event and features an Olympic-distance course. There's a 1.5-mile swim in the American River, a 40K bike ride and a 10K run along the American River Bike Trail. The races start at 7:30 a.m and 8 a.m.,as there are also two other modified triathlons available for participants.

The Sacramento Color Run is more a fun-filled event than a traditional competition. It's a 5K run and was created in 2011 to bring healthiness and happiness within communities. Participants get all colored up at each kilometer and have a blast with friends and fellow runners in what can only be described as a large running party. This year's event will take place on August 6 at Raley Field and is an untimed event. The only goal is to have fun.

The Run to Feed the Hungry event takes place every Thanksgiving morning and benefits the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services. Since the inaugural run in 1994, this event has become a growing tradition that has seen its number of participants reach nearly 30,000. The event has a 10K run and a 5K run/walk event. It's a great way to start off your Thanksgiving morning and it's a family friendly function. The race will begin on J Street at 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, November 24, rain or shine.

The California International Marathon (CIM) will take place on December 4, and will continue its 30+ year tradition of a marathon race finishing in front of the California State Capitol. Brought to the Sacramento region in 1983 by the Sacramento Running Association (SRA), this event is sanctioned by the USATF and is a qualifier for both the Boston Marathon and the Olympic Marathon Trials. The CIM also has a relay challenge and a 2.62-mile maraFUNrun and Fitness walk.
