Since 1919, Americans have set aside November 11 as a day to honor the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Sacramento residents are proud of the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces, and these local small businesses show their respect with special deals on Veteran's Day.

This unique eatery is owned and run by two former Marines, one with a gift for marketing and one with the touch of a culinary genius. In addition to assisting numerous local charities and causes, the owners offer discounts every day of the year to active duty and retired military veterans and to local first responders. The menu is built around Belgian liege waffles with creative combinations like the fresh egg, feta, olives, dolmades, sun-dried tomato, savory onion jam, herb waffle and balsamic vinegar on Jimmy's a Greek. There are sweet selections, salads and other entrees that are made completely fresh in house. Now open for happy hour on Fridays and Saturdays from 5 p.m - 9 p.m., Waffle Experience offers local beers and wines, along with an ever-changing selection of small plates and treats. Recent choices have included roasted beef bone marrow with garlic, truffle oil and kale chips, succulent Clams Arabiatta and fresh strawberries with chunks of sweet liege and a lemoncello and poppy seed custard.

Ginger's is a fun, tropically themed restaurant in Roseville, owned and operated for over 5 years by a local married couple. On Veteran's Day, the owners offer 20% off food and drinks for those with military ID or who come in their military uniform. This is an especially nice way to recognize veterans, as the menu is both extensive and diverse. Breakfast is served all day, with savory options like a tower of potato pancakes layered with cheese, sausage and bacon, and an egg, spinach, mushroom and cheese concoction with potatoes and hollandaise. Get a tasty champagne mimosa to go along with your eggs, or be more adventurous and try a Peach Bellini or Cranberry Hibiscus. If breakfast isn't your thing, check out appetizers like sesame crusted seared ahi, crispy calamari and coconut shrimp, or try Ginger's signature apple walnut chicken salad. Barbequed tri-tip makes a heavenly hoagie, and burger options include pineapple, teriyaki sauce and wasabi ranch sauce. Treat your favorite soldier to dessert, or toast to their bravery with beer, wine, Mai Tais, margaritas or any other item from the full bar. The eatery also features live music on the tropical patio, in every style from Frank Sinatra standards and Elvis to surfer tunes, classic rock, dance music and Hawaiian style ukulele.

Federalist is a favorite Midtown spot for dining, drinking and hanging out, and are open from lunches to late nights. In honor of the holiday, military personnel can get $1 off the price of any draft beer from open. Shipping containers were creatively repurposed to create the hip, casual vibe of the pub, which is complete with bocce ball, a rooftop garden, communal tables and an impressive list of brews both local and far-flung. Sacramento beers, identified on the menu as "Lo-cal", include suds from Bike Dog Brewing Co, Ruhstaller, Track 7, Jackrabbit, Yolo Brew, Knee Deep and American River. The food is off the charts tasty, with some of the best and freshest gourmet pizza found anywhere. Or try a smoked Portobello "sando" with arugula pesto, goat cheese, peppers & onions. Enjoy a hearty couscous salad with pickled peppers and dried cranberries, and finish off with zabaglione champagne custard with fresh berries.
