THE DEFENSE

Q: Let's start with the basics. How old are you? Where are you from?

A: Fifty-four. Fair Oaks, 95628.

Q: I see you are married. I have to ask, does your wife like your Harley? Is she supportive?

A: She'll bring it up and say, "Hey, why don't we go for a ride?" which really makes me happy. I haven't ridden anyone else, but always hoping to give someone else a ride. Every time I've offered, they've said, "Oh, no." But I have an extra helmet with me today if you want to ride it.

Q: I'll have to think about that. If I did come, are there any rules I need to know about as a passenger?

A: The only rule I have is that they have to wear a full-face helmet. My wife wears a full-face helmet too. We have matching helmets. The leather is an extra set of skin when you hit the road.

Q: That's a lot to take in. So, do you ever like to just ride around and get a little lost?

A: You get on the country roads, just turn on one you never heard of, and just go. We're out for the ride, not for the destination. We'll give ourselves a destination, but we don't have to necessarily have to make it there. Sometimes, we've seen different destinations, and we'll say, "Let's stay here."

Q: Have you been down to Monterey? Have you taken Highway One?

A: We plan on it! I have a friend in Morro Bay. We'll definitely go. We are eventually going to take it down to San Diego. I don't know San Diego real well, but there's that big hotel you always see on all the movies, The Coronado. That's the place you have to go. You have to see that. There are so many places to go see there.

Q: You have a relaxed way to travel. Explain why destinations aren't all that important to you.

A: You know, if you don't have a destination, you won't get disappointed when you get there. No expectations. I like to be sporadic.

Q: So you and your wife use your vehicle strictly for recreation. Owning a Harley can be a social event and you can easily get to know other owners. Have you done any charity runs on yours?

A: I've been on the Toys for Tots Run and the Walt Gray Run. All that money goes for the children. It's a pretty big one. It started at Thunder Valley. Can you imagine about 3,000 bikers coming in?

Q: From what I've seen today, people will always want to stop and talk to you about your Harley. It's like you're some kind of rock star who happens to own a Harley. What do you do when you're in a rush and don't have time to talk?

A: It does draw attention. It's different. Anywhere I stop, I get into a conversation with somebody. At red lights, people say, "Nice bike." I can walk out of a business and have four men standing around my Harley, wanting to talk to me about my trike. I'm never in a rush!
