Sacramento 2012 Holiday Concert Preview

There is something about being in a large crowd of people tuning out everything but the people on stage. The experience can be quite therapeutic. During a time of year where stress levels are known to be high, perhaps you might want to squeeze in a show or two. Give yourself the gift of music this year and check out one of these shows.

The Sacramento Master Singers, under the artistic direction of Dr. Ralph Hughes, is arguably the area's best chamber choir. The SMS began performing in 1983 but the current lineup consists of 48 members. The group's annual children's holiday concert makes for a memorable family outing as the 45-minute program length is ideal for all ages. You can spend some time at one of the many restaurants on K street downtown after the show and make a whole night of it.

The Sacramento Choral Society & Orchestra, directed by Dr. Donald Kendrick, was established in 1996. Kendrick's choirs have been broadcast locally on both radio and television for their immense talent. The SCSO is a non-profit organization comprised of volunteer singers and orchestra players with a current roster exceeding 200 members. Wells Fargo's "Home For The Holidays" 2012 concert will feature the Sacramento Children's Chorus, directed by Lynn Stevens.

A 35-year holiday tradition, Chanticleer is a must-see show. Chanticleer debuted on June 27, 1978 before a capacity audience at San Francisco's historic Old Mission Dolores. It has since commissioned over 70 composers who have written over 90 pieces premiered by the group. This holiday show at the Cathedral Of The Blessed Sacrament will make an impression you won't soon forget. This show is truly an amazing experience and highly recommended.

Sacramento Baroque Soloists are in their 11th season. The ensemble was formed in 2001 by Lisa and Michael Lawson. The group performs music from the 17th to 19th century, creating a unique musical experience. This concert will feature vocals, violin, flute, cello, guitar, accordion, whistles and keyboard. This is a classic show perfect for the entire family. Please note there is a third day for this concert being performed at Stegmann Hall (9200 Fair Oaks Boulevard) in Fair Oaks. This last show will be Sunday, December 3rd at 3 p.m.

Your munchkins will love this show because it is by kids, for kids. The Sacramento Children's Chorus provides choral music education for kids ranging in ages from seven to 19. Performing at five different levels of musical ability, this concert showcases local talent at a very high level. These kids go on tour often so it is nice to be able to catch them at home in your own backyard. These children perform like true masters of their craft.
