CARMICHAEL, Calif. (CBS13) — A local computer expert was instrumental in identifying the soldier who leaked thousands of classified documents on the war in Afghanistan.

The massive database of secret documents say the U.S. is falling behind in the war, and America’s ally, Pakistan, is plotting to kill our soldiers. The website Wikileaks.org vows to post even more leaked documents.

We spoke to the local man who exposed the identity of the soldier responsible for leaking the war secrets, and ask him why he did it.

“I’ve received threats of death and otherwise,” said Adrian Lamo, a cyber threat analyst.

Some people want Adrian, a Carmichael resident, to disappear for good.

“I’ve been told more times than I can keep track of that blood is on my hands,” said Adrian.

Not for what he knows, but for who he knows.

“Mr. Manning originally contacted me on or about May 20th,” said Adrian.

Mr. Manning is U.S. Army intelligence analyst Pvt. Bradley Manning. He’s accused of leaking more than 90,000 pages of secret documents about the U.S. Led war in Afghanistan to the website Wikileaks.

“He contacted me because he wanted a friend,” said Adrian.

Adrian is known in the hacker world as a hero. In 2004, he penetrated the computer networks of Microsoft and the New York Times, an incident that earned him probation. He says Pvt. Manning contacted him in May through instant messaging to tell him of his exploits.

“In his own words he wanted Hillary Clinton to wake up and have a heart attack, pretty much,” said Adrian. He says Manning was trying to be an army of one and stop the war in Afghanistan — a war Manning felt was unjust.

“He did so with the stated intention of disrupting United States’ foreign policy,” said Adrian.

He says the young soldier also bragged about releasing a controversial video to Wikileaks showing us army helicopters shooting civilians in Baghdad.

“It was about two to three days into chatting with him I began to realize that he’s into some fairly serious activity,” said Adrian.

Why did Adrian turn Manning in? He thought it would save lives.

“I don’t think that this is going to do us any good in terms of trying to build relationships and maintain relationships with our allies in the war on terror,” said Adrian.

The Pentagon says it will take days if not weeks to determine the damage done by the massive leak of classified material. And as far as protection for Adrian, he says he gets federal protection when he’s at public events.

Editor’s note: Since CBS13 originally aired this story in July 2010, the website Wikileaks has released more than a quarter million more classified diplomatic cables allegedly handed over by Manning, a security breach that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called an attack on the U.S. and world.

If you are in the United States Armed Forces, the actions described above are TREASON. I don’t care if it is a Republican or Democrat administration. Anyone care to guess what the standard penalty for treason is? I hope they fry that punk…

“Former computer hacker Adrian Lamo of Sacramento, Calif., said he alerted the military after Manning confided in him online that he had leaked the video in addition to 260,000 classified diplomatic cables.

Lamo, who first provided his account to Wired.com, told The Associated Press on Monday that he had agonized over the decision.

“I turned him in because, for the rest of my life, I’d wonder if something he leaked would have cost a human life,” Lamo said.

In 2004, Lamo had pleaded guilty to breaking into The New York Times’ computer system and still owes $62,800 in federal restitution. He said he has received no financial benefit from turning in Manning and that the money he owes was never discussed”.

Lamo’s restitution was subsequently dropped in September 2010. Paid in full.

BLUF: Lamo turned in PFC Manning in order to negate his restitution. Lamo is not a hero; just a snitch.

    1. Rich says:

Naw, he isnt a snitch, you dont even know what a snitch is. Lamo did the right thing regardless of whether his restitution was dropped or not. Its the prison and schoolyard mentality like yours that alot of people have that keeps wrong doing from coming to light.
he fact of the matter is, is that this poster boy for the dont ask, dont tell policy Manning should be hanged by the neck then put in front of the firing squad.
FYI a snitch is someone who exposes harmful info on someone out of animosity, revenge and personal gain…kind of like Assenge and Manning. Gee, how ironic. So take off your prison blues and grow up, will ya? We have enough felons and children to worry about.

  7. Dan says:

Why isn’t this guy being tried for treason yet? There is no question that what he did is wrong.

  8. Noodles says:

You guys might like to be lied to..You people might not want to know who we killed accidently…You folks might not want to know about all the sweetheart deals and 9.9 TRILLION that the US Comptroller doesn’t know where it went…But I do.

Obama is a liar…All the cables show EVERYONE in power has lied and stole…Yet your mad because this kid brought all this up to people’s attention?

Exactly why are we still in Iraq and Afghanistan? Can some one give me a real reason?

    1. noone says:

That was no “kid” that was a member of the US military who swore to defend this nation but chose instead to release information known to present risk of grave damage to our nation. Not an excusable action. It was treason by every definition and he should be hanged by the neck until dead.

    2. frank says:

How about thousands of real reasons? Google List of Victims from Sept. 11, 2001

  9. shawna says:

Noodles! Exactly. Anybody who likes having their government lie to them deserves exactly what they get for it. If I know how the US is behaving, in my mind name too, then I know how it’s going to go for Americans overseas. We behave ourselves and do good things then pretty sure we’ll be treated well overseas. You can figure out the alternative can’t you folks. As someone else said… he SNITCHED to get his own terms changes. And yes .. thanks.. WE know what the word snitched means. Obama and bush did a LOT of damage. We need to know what it is so we can fix the damage. Shame on you guys who support this weasel instead of realizing that what Assange did was a good thing. You’re nothing but sheeple.

  10. scopedope says:

He’s a friggen TRAITOR! I hope they hang him.

    1. noone says:

      Damn straight 276 Rage on.

  11. TRW says:

This Adrian guy is the worst sort of snitch. The kind of guy who would turn in his own mother if she didn’t adhere to his way of thinking. A future brown shirt.

This seems to be a common misconception that is being propagated by the major news media. Despite the total number of cables that were transmitted to Wikileaks (over 200,000), the total number of cables that have been released to the public as of this date still stands at 1259 to my knowledge. Of those 1259, all were vetted for information that might expose innocents to risk of injury or death and timely notice of intent to release was provided as well for the same purpose.

The persistence of many major news organizations in inaccurately implying or stating that all 200,000+ cables were released implies that the release was done without evaluating and compensating for the creation of risk to innocents. That suggests to me the possibility that some of the major news media may be in some degree of collusion with those in government trying to stop Wikileaks from exposing the truth.

Everything happening with this nonsense is THE TRUTH and if nobody can handle THE TRUTH then perhaps you should go die now. I don’t know about you all but I’d rather have the full truth than a bunch of lies build up. These “protectors” of our country are clouding the truth and in the process of doing that, they’re ruining their own citizens’ lives by lying to us. They’re not protecting us from anything except what’s REALLY happening in the world, so KUDOS to Manning for exposing the real truth about this ridiculous war and KUDOS to Lamo for also exposing the truth. All you tiny-minded sheep taking sides are not looking at what’s really important. THE TRUTH. But I’m sure everyone is just blissfully content being lied to day in and day out with their routines. I, for one, am not and it’s refreshing to have truth uncovered, no matter the content.

Some say hes a hero some say hes a traitor. Uniform.Code.Millitary.Justice by deffintion he is a traitor. There are things the american people do not need to know, should not know. I agree with most of you that say the Gov is lieing to the American people. In some cases the truth is to ungly and it puts good people in harms way. But some of you dont care about that, you say you care but realy don’t. Our Gov is not without its problems, but this county is still the best in the WORLD. It is we the people of this Amazing country that can change it. If you want a better Gov pay attention to who is running. Actualy listen and sift out all the garbage. Just remember for things to get better they may afect you directly. Need to look past your oun nose. Need to think about the greater good. It sounds cheezy but its the truth. Millitary courts will do what they need to do.

  18. Steveo says:

If you see someone gun down on your block and you knew who did it and turned them in are you a snitch? Noting but gang member attitudes about snitching, A snitch is one that brings up every stupid little thing you do wrong and I tell you this is no stupid little mistake. It is Treason and is punishable by DEATH.
