BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — Berkeley City Council members are considering a resolution that would declare the Army private suspected of leaking classified information to WikiLeaks a hero and call for his release.

The council is expected to vote on the resolution in support of Pfc. Bradley Manning, who is being held in a military brig, on Tuesday.

It has already been approved by the city’s Peace and Justice Commission.

Bob Meola, the peace and justice commissioner who authored the resolution, tells the San Francisco Chronicle that Manning is a patriot and should get a medal.

But Commissioner Thyme Siegel — who voted against the resolution — says it is premature because the effects of the disclosures are not yet clear.

Federal officials have said such leaks could endanger lives.

I’am sorry. Isn’t a soldier who leaks classified information a traitor?

  2. RUKiddingME says:

Wow this is disgusting!!! Berkley, SHAME on you for EVEN considering honoring a traitor to his country. We are in a time of War and this man chose to be a traitor. He is lucky that he is alive today instead of during past wars because he would have been facing a firing squad.

    1. Julian says:

When the hell did we ever utilize the firing squad for punishment?

  3. jack says:

HERO? When I was a soldier during Viet Nam, if you sold or gave away classified info you were a traitor, and thats exactly what he is.
He should be tied to a post and shot for the anti american he really is.

  4. Chris says:

I agree with the previous posts. This man was obviously a traitor. This leak is surely motivated by greed. This young man wanted to make a quick buck, despite the consequences. Whether this info should or should not be made public, is not the question. He broke the law either way. Do I feel he should be executed for it ? No, but he certainly should not be made a hero and should be punished for his actions.

  5. Geary says:

What else would one expect from the “Peoples Republic of Berkeley”? (Space Cadet City)

  6. CHUCK NEWSOME says:

YOU CAN BELIEVE THE CITY OFBERKLEY IS A COMMUNIST ENCLAVE, AND SHOULD BE SEALED OFF COMPLETLY , CAL BERKLEY CANCELLED BASEBALL, SO THE TOWN SHOULD BE EVACUATED AND MOVED TO RUSSIA, WHERE THEY BELONG.

  7. RUKiddingME says:

Remeber when Berkley was going to disallow any type of Military Recruitment in their city. So the federal government said fine we will withdraw any funds for your city. They reconsidered . Maybe that should be done again.

  8. TJ says:

This is just shameful and he is a traitor and should be tired for treason. Simple and easy!! I say no more federal funding to this town!!

  9. George says:

The potential harm to international relations and covert operations far outweighs any potential good this could accomplish. Diplomacy must be confidential. What good can come from Iran knowing what the Saudis said to us or the Russians knowing what we said to Germany. This (expletives deleted) is a traitor. Anyone who was in the service knows that divulging confidential information is a court martial offense. The folks in Berkeley need to visit the real world occassionally to get a grip.

  10. Mac says:

Can’t believe I’m reading this. Court martial offense is the operative here. And while they’re at it, they should lock him up in solitary until he’s a rotting corpse. The decision makers in Berkeley should be put away as well. Traitors, nothing more than insignificant traitors
