Jewelry Store In Sacramento Hit By Thief

By Maria Medina

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- A bold robber punched a jewelry store owner in her face then robbed her. Police call it a crime of opportunity, which tends to happen more frequently around the holidays.

A jewelry store owner was attacked and robbed in broad daylight, and police say, this is just one of several robberies a couple days before Christmas.

"During the holidays it is a crime of opportunity, and a lot of times these suspects will look for these opportunities," said Sacramento Police spokesman, Sgt. Terrell Marshall.

She was punched in the face, robbed and left feeling violated. The jewelry store owner felt so shaken after a thief stole her purse and store jewelry, she wouldn't speak on-camera.

"I think this individual was waiting for them so they took advantage of them," said Sgt. Marshall.

Police say that thieves take advantage of people anywhere and everywhere they can make a quick buck during the holidays.

Glen Forrest, another Sacramento business owner who runs Royce Air, says the two men who tried to steal copper from him claimed to do it to make money for Christmas gifts. That was the same excuse a robber gave to his victims when he walked into a Colfax convenience store earlier this week. The man told the workers he robbed them because someone robbed him – and even apologized.

Then this morning a man who, police say, took out a gun and tried to rob a Jack in the Box restaurant, was there last night, but couldn't get inside because workers had closed up for their Christmas party.

"If you look at the economy and the time of year, criminals take advantage of those opportunities," said Sgt. Marshall.

Police are still looking for the jewelry store suspect. He dropped some of those items he stole. He's described as white, 5'9" tall and wearing a gray sweatshirt.
