Nunez Family Sends Gift To Prison Official

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Prison officials say the family of former state Assembly speaker Fabian Nunez sent a Kindle electronic reading device to an administrator in the prison where Nunez's son is imprisoned.

Corrections department spokesman Oscar Hidalgo said Monday that Lt. Michelle Hamilton, an assistant to the prison warden, returned the electronic book immediately. The attempt by the Nunez family to provide the gift sometime last year was first reported by The Sacramento Bee.

Esteban Nunez, who is 21, is serving a seven-year sentence for manslaughter for his role in instigating a fatal knife attack in San Diego. In one of his last acts as governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger cut Nunez's sentence by more than half.

Esteban Nunez arrived in June at Mule Creek State Prison in Ione, 40 miles southeast of the state capital.
