1 Dead After Vehicle Hits Kids In Ceres

CERES (CBS13) -- One child is dead and two others were injured after being hit by a truck near a Ceres School.

Four girls, ages 13-14, were crossing Darwin Avenue and Fowler Road at around 9 a.m., when a Chevy Truck headed south on Darwin Avenue sped past the stop sign and hit them, according to Ceres Police.

One girl died at the scene, a second was air lifted to the UC Davis Medical Center with major injuries, the third suffered serious injuries, and the fourth was treated at the scene for minor bumps and bruises and released.

The girl who was not seriously injured, Alexis DeLeon, spoke to CBS13's Andrea Menniti.

"He was already barely turning the corner so we couldn't have made it," said DeLeon.

The families of the victims have been notified, but the three others' names have not been released.

The girls were walking to nearby Mae Hensley Junior High School when the incident, which was witnessed by other students, happened. Counselors have been called to the school to help students cope.

The driver was taken by police for questioning and a blood test.
