Feds To Examine San Joaquin Delta Water Pollution

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is planning a comprehensive review of water pollution in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.

The review announced Thursday will be conducted under the authority of the Clean Water Act. It will include a study of pollutants from farm and household pesticides, urban wastewater and wetland disturbances.

EPA regional administrator Jared Blumenfeld says the delta is a critical ecosystem on the brink of collapse. He says the review will determine what government should do that isn't being done.

The EPA will study other factors that may be harming water quality in the ecosystem, including invasive species and selenium. Agency biologists are seeking public comment on the EPA's plan.
