Family Of Calif. Boy Who Shot Self In Head Hopeful

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- The grandfather of a 3-year-old Shasta County boy in critical condition after accidentally shooting himself in the head says his grandson is showing some hopeful signs.

Albert Presidio, grandfather of Grady Stepp, told The Record Searchlight of Redding on Wednesday that doctors have stabilized the boy's brain pressure.

Presidio says that doctors haven't told him what's next but that the community has been incredibly supportive.

The boy shot himself with a gun at his great-grandfather's home outside Shingletown on Sunday morning. He was hospitalized in Redding before being flown to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.

Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko said Wednesday that deputies are looking into whether the gun the boy used was secured properly.
