MANTECA, Calif. (CBS13) — A woman was able to hold on to a vehicle’s hood for dear life for more than 40 miles when her husband allegedly floored the accelerator after a domestic argument, authorities said.

The Manteca Police Department said 36-year-old Christopher Michael Carroll attacked his wife shortly after midnight on February 26 and stormed out of the house, getting into the family minivan and pulling out of the driveway.

His wife, who asked not to be identified, chased him outside and stood in front of the vehicle in an attempt to block him.

“She jumped on the hood, and that’s when her adventure started,” said Manteca police spokesman Rex Osborn.

Carroll allegedly stepped on the gas and sped through the streets of Manteca until he reached Interstate 205, authorities said. His wife clung to the minivan’s windshield wiper and side mirror as the vehicle accelerated to more than 100 MPH.

Carroll allegedly didn’t slow down until he reached Pleasanton, more than 40 miles away, according to witness reports to police

“There’s a purpose that I’m still alive, because it was a miracle,” the victim said.

The woman was able to roll off the hood safely when Carroll finally pulled over, and due to the 45 degree temperatures and high speeds, she was suffering from hypothermia when emergency crews found her.

Carroll is in custody in the San Joaquin County Jail. He has been charged with attempted murder.

He ad arrested for Attempted murder. She should be arrested for SUCCESSFUL stupidity. Now, what he did was wrong and he should get in trouble, but what she did was just plain dumb. Let him go drive off! Never get in front of or jump onto a moving Vehicle. NEVER!

I disagree with the rhetorical comments, especially because this woman’s safety (and life) were put in danger. With that caveat, I am going to venture to say of the men responding, some have probably been pinned in before by a screaming or violent woman egging them on (e.g., inviting a violent act against them to ensure they gain a “victim” role as the status quo). I have seen this by women in public, my sister to her husband, and even a female supervisor to a male colleague before. We men want to run away, but we need not back down. We are not cowards. Be a gentlemen, let her rage, and prove to her you are a true man (and the hero you are) by not responding with violence. She may even learn from it, as she’ll be the one stuck with guilt for the incident.

Very clearly put, my friend! And I believe you are correct. And, I believe it happens far more times than not in domestic arguments. There are a lot of men out there with criminal harrassment charges against them, when all they wanted to do was remove themselves from this abusive tactic.
Problem is, a woman knows what are the most affective buttons to push, and they push them well. So being a ‘gentleman’ is easier said than done.
This guy messed up big-time with with his actions, but if you got to the real nuts and bolts of this situation, she is probably the real abuser and needs a lot of help (which she will never get, as the system itself enables her to continue being ‘the victim’).

Amen to that! attempted murder is pretty stupid on it’s face because if he wanted to murder her, she would not have held onto the hood that long. He could have slammed on the brakes at any point or done some quick movements to the left or right and she would have been finished. Seems to me he had to try pretty hard to give her a lesson she’ll never forget, while still keeping her alive.

    2. James Bacon says:

Cheers on your comment. SHE put her life at risk more so than HE put her life at risk.

The husband was trying to leave the situation before it could possibly get violent but the wife wouldn’t let it drop. She blocked his retreat and got what she deserved. I hope she was wearing underwear.

I am directing a new Tom Cruise movie and would like to offer that lady some stunk work. If she is as slim as Charlize Theron I believe that she could have steady work here in Hollywood.

  6. frank says:

Well, if Hollywood has its way, this stunt will become a new reality show Wives who drive their husbands crazy.

  8. DMO says:

“Who stands in front of a car with their body trying to stop it?”

Police do all the time and then shoot the driver for assaulting them with a deadly weapon.
Very common trick to escalate a traffic stop to a felony.

40 miles at over 100 mph. And where was the CHP?

Laugh, clown, laugh! It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt. . .

  11. Hank Warren says:

Attempted murder seems a bit much. Out-of-control prosecutions, yet another violation of our rights. Add it to the list of gov’t violations of our right:
They violate the 1st Amendment by placing protesters in cages, banning books like “America Deceived II” and censoring the internet.
They violate the 2nd Amendment by confiscating guns.
They violate the 4th and 5th Amendment by molesting airline passengers.
They violate the entire Constitution by starting undeclared wars for foreign countries.
Impeach Obama and sweep out the Congress.

A few years ago, there was a woman in Vermont (I’m not sure what state that’s in) who stood in front of a tractor trailer, in an attempt to keep it from moving and wouldn’t budge. The truck driver moved his rig forward anyway. Guess what happened to her?

    1. Mason says:

What happened next? Don’t leave us hanging you big tease. I’m on pins and needles. BTW, Vermont itself is a state.

    2. MrLiberty says:

      Thank you public education…….

      VERMONT IS A STATE!

    3. ADM says:

I was being facitious, for crying out loud. Of course I know Vermont’s a state. I live next door in New Hampshire. What happened to the woman? She got run over and died. Apparently, the woman was ticked that the driver was speeding in 30 mph zone and she and her daughter followed the rig for another 30 miles. She stood in front of the truck while her daughter was sent to get a cop. Bad move on her part, but a typical liberal mindset. She was 45.

    4. Gina says:

It’s in the state of Vermont, goober.

I know. We all know. Ok, vaGina?

  19. Hereticmonk says:

I bet she never jumps onto a hood of a car again in her life. What did she expect him to do? He should have taken her through a car wash on his way to Pleasanton. I can’t see how he can be charged with murder since she’s the one who jumped up there in the first place. It’s not like he forced her up there.

    1. Lab Rat says:

It was attempted murder that he was charged with. He didn’t force her up there, but his actions could easily have killled her and he didn’t stop.

      1. Cygnus says:

That charge won’t stick. Just because his actions could have killed her doesn’t mean that he had an intent to kill her. A better charge is reckless endangerment.

  20. barb says:

She survived this time. Who jumps on the hood AFTER he’s already assaulted you?
Next time she might not get lucky. Get help before he kills you.
