Military Families Arrive At Travis From Japan

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (CBS13) -- Hundreds of military families arrived back in the United States after leaving earthquake-stricken Japan.

Two chartered DC-10s transported about 340 Department of Defense employees and their family members to Travis Air Force Base early Tuesday morning. Many of the evacuees have lived in Japan for years.

Some parents said they evacuated to help reduce pressure on Japan's resources, while others left the country to avoid any potential threat from the nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, which deteriorated rapidly in the wake of the massive temblor and tsunami.

"We weren't really sure about the conflicting information, what was or wasn't really happening," said Timothy Hargrave.

The departures were voluntary, and some military families chose to remain in Japan.

Officials haven't released any firm plans to bring the evacuated families back to Japan.
