Athlete Dies After Davis Picnic Day Party

DAVIS, Calif. (CBS13) -- A man who suffered a head injury during a party during the UC Davis Picnic Day has died, officials said.

Former UC Davis baseball player Scott Heinig, 22, fell and hit his head late Saturday night at a party on 5th Street in Davis. Heinig died from his injuries on Sunday, authorities said.

The Davis Police Department said the circumstances surrounding the death have not been determined, but officials are investigating whether alcohol played a role.

"They were consuming alcohol. As far as if it's the causal factor, that we don't know," said Lt. Paul Doroshov.

The UC Davis Picnic Day, an open house tradition for the campus more than a century old, had a heavy police presence Saturday in the wake of last year's event, which was marred by a number of violent incidents and arrests.

Police tightened enforcement for public drunkenness and alcohol sales and cracked down on boisterous behavior.

Authorities say they will release specific numbers comparing incidents this Picnic Day to last year's event this week.
