Hundreds Attend Memorial For Man Who Died On Picnic Day

DAVIS, Calif. (CBS13) -- More than 900 mourners attended a memorial service in memory of a former UC Davis baseball player who died at a party after Picnic Day.

Friends, family and former teammates remembered 22-year-old Scott Heinig as a confident player with an infectious smile and a loyal personality.

The focus for the service attendees was on celebrating Heinig's life, rather than the lingering questions that remain after his death.

More than a week and a half after the fatal incident at a party on April 16, authorities said some sort of rough housing left the victim with a serious head injury. Heinig died the next day, but investigators have released few details on the circumstance surrounding the incident.

The Davis Police Department acting chief told CBS13 that no spokesperson or investigator could comment on the case Tuesday.

Part of the investigation will focus on whether a crime was committed. Even if Heinig was killed by accident, charges could be filed against anyone determined to be responsible.

Authorities are waiting for the Coroner's office to finish the report on Heinig's death.
