Modesto College President Resigns Over Song Lyrics

MODESTO, Calif. (AP) -- The president of Modesto Junior College is resigning over racy song lyrics that he posted on his personal website, including a line comparing a trip on Amtrak to a train ride to Auschwitz.

The Modesto Bee reports that Gaither Loewenstein resigned on Wednesday, about five days after the website was made public.

The site first went up in 2007 and included samples of more than 100 of his songs. The lyrics included foul language and references to homosexuality and drug use.

In one line, Loewenstein uses an expletive to complain about an Amtrak ride from Sacramento to Portland, saying, "They got better service on the way to Auschwitz."

Loewenstein told the Bee he understands why people would be offended by the lyrics and that they were inappropriate for a college president.
