Cooler Weather May Have Chilling Effect On Businesses

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- Memorial Day is considered the unofficial start of summer, but the weather pattern we're in feels more like fall. It depends on who you ask as to whether or not it's a good thing.

First let's talk about the positives.

"I'm enjoying it. I'd rather have it cold than hot," said Kasie Kellar of Green Acres Nursery.

At Green Acres business is booming. It's the right climate.

"When it's like this we do notice great foot traffic because it's really nice to garden in this weather; not when it's typical May 100 degree weather," said Kellar.

As counterintuitive as it might seem, cool weather -- even a little rain -- makes for a gardening paradise.

"Just because we've had a longer stretch of cool weather we've had the rain here or there, but many of us bear taking that as a positive thing," said Kellar.

It's not so much a good thing if you happen to be in the water park industry.

Sunsplash might look busy, but the truth is this entire week it's booked by local schools who committed to coming -- rain or shine.

"This weekend was terrible. We probably had like 500 people a day, and we normally have like 2,500 people a day," said Sunsplash GM Steve Rogers.

This weird weather is a real problem for business, and that tends to have a trickle-down effect.

"We have 500 employees, and if we're not doing that much business, we can't work all of them. A lot of them are summer kids trying to make as much money as they can," said Rogers.
