State Lawmaker Arrested In Basement Of State Capitol On Suspicion Of Drunk Driving

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – A state lawmaker was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in Sacramento on Wednesday night.

The California Highway Patrol arrested Assemblyman Martin around 10:00 p.m. in the basement of the State Capitol.

According to CHP, officers first noticed Garrick's Silver Toyota Camry driving over the speed limit near 11th and O streets.  Garrick failed to pullover, ran a stop sign and then drove into the basement garage at the State Capitol.

CHP officers on bike followed Garrick into the garage and noticed he showed signs of intoxication.  After failing a field sobriety test, Garrick was arrested and released on his own recognizance.

"I am deeply sorry for my lapse of judgment yesterday evening. Driving while under the influence of alcohol is dangerous.  I apologize to my family for the embarrassment I have caused them, and I hope they will forgive me for my actions. I also apologize to my constituents.  They have the right to hold their elected representative to a high standard, and I regret that it was one I failed to meet last night. I will strive to never let them down again," Garrick said in a statement released today.

Garrick was alone in the vehicle and headed home according to his chief of staff.  The statement also says Garrick will not be at the Capitol today but will be back on Monday.

Garrick represents the 74th Assembly district near San Diego and was elected in November of 2006.
