Fire Guts San Jose Fraternity House

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – Firefighters gained the upper hand on a blaze at a fraternity house near San Jose State University overnight – but not before the structure was made uninhabitable.

The four-alarm fire was reported at the Kappa Sigma fraternity house at 168 S. 11th St. at 3:21 a.m., fire Capt. Rob Brown said.

All 28 of the student residents were evacuated from the house, but a firefighter was taken to a hospital with second-degree burns.

Neighbors and occupants initially reported light smoke coming from the attic and flames were shooting through the roof of the house as of 4:20 a.m., Brown said.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
