Buy It And Try It: Hercules Hook

If you've ever hung something pretty heavy you know it's a pain finding the stud in the wall. But you won't have to do that with the Hercules Hook.

"I do exhibit building and repairing maintenance," said Richard Horgan, museum volunteer.

Richard has volunteered at the discovery museum for 15 years! He's put up and taken down his fair share of exhibits.

A lot of exhibits means a lot of holes in the wall!

The Hercules Hooks say "no more pounding or damage to your walls." They also claim you'll need no tools and no studs.

The secret? Reinforced steel design that penetrates any drywall and braces itself in the back.

"I want to see it," said Richard.

We ordered the hooks off TV, and this is how they showed up with no real packaging -- just a post office envelope with 20 hooks and some directions.

First we need to round up some things we can hang.

We brought along Good Day Sacramento producer Ally who weights just about 125 pounds.

First we hang a boar head instead, that weighs about 20 pounds.

Richard inserts his first hook with a simple twist, push and turn.

"That was easy," said Richard.

We start light by hanging the boar head we've nicknamed Hercules.
After attaching Hercules to the Hercules Hook it seems to hang quite well.

But that was just 20 pounds. Let's now try holding a 125-ish-pound Ally.

Without using much of her weight we already have a tear. We try it again. This time we bring in some pillows in case Ally falls.

It pretty much tore up the wall.

So it works on 20 pounds, but now with 125. How about something in the middle? We bring in 70 pounds of cement mix and it doesn't hold that either.

"I think it's just great for hanging pictures," said Richard.

Now we've left Richard with some holes to fix! Fortunately, he's used it.

In fine print on the package it says the amount of weight it can support varies based on the condition of the wall being used. It's supposed to work on drywall, which is what we used.

I paid $14.99 for 20 hooks.
