Buy It And Try It: One Touch Can Opener

Yuck! There must be an easier way to open a can! The One Touch Can Opener claims to take out the effort and the mess of canned-food cooking for just $19.95.

So where better to test the opener than Kerr Middle School in Elk Grove? But since Kurtis is on assignment, we sent producer Dave Manoucheri and photographer Dennis Lopez to the school cafeteria to help with the kids' culinary concoctions.

"Kurtis has made spaghetti, he's peeled potatoes, but I'm feeding the youth of America!" says Manoucheri.

Brenda Blount has worked at Kerr for more than 20 years, opening probably thousands of cans with different can-openers. We asked her how many cans she opens a day, "About a half-dozen," says Blount.

She uses a mechanical contraption called the "Man Eater" to open cans. And open it does it in under ten seconds using the old crank method. Dave takes about 30 seconds.

So, time for the One Touch. Following the instructions, Bonnie puts it on the industrial-sized fruit cocktail, and . . . nothing.

"Let's try a little can. I'll be darned, it took the rim right off," says Blount.

Yep, a regular three and a half-inch can cut just like the commercial, even giving the smooth edge and cut-free lid. But trying it on the big can again, the One Touch stalls.

"The "Man Eater" took about ten seconds, and I took about 30 seconds, and we've wasted two minutes on the One Touch," says Blount.

But trying it on a small can of tomato paste was a success. "For the little cans it's great! Very handy. It's quick and we didn't get any spillage," adds Blount.

So the One Touch works great for the standard can, saving twists, turns and even cuts. But Bonnie says, don't open any industrial-sized cans.

We followed the instructions to the letter, and they did say it would open cans bigger than three and a half inches. For some reason it wouldn't open our industrial-sized fruit cocktail, but worked perfectly on the everyday household cans. The can opener costs about $19.95 and runs on two AA batteries.
