Buy It And Try It: The Eggstractor

The Eggstractor says it'll save you valuable time in the kitchen. All you do is put a hard boiled egg in, and out pops your peeled egg. But is it all it's cracked up to be?

Mike Smith knows it's an art to hard boil an egg.

"I get paid to do it so I guess I am a professional," he says.

As the manager of the Bonn Lair pub in Sacramento, he needs them to be perfectly peeled to create the pub specialty - the scotch egg.

"It's basically a hard boiled egg wrapped in ground pork sausage, breaded and deep fried. It's basically a heart attack on a platter? If you buy into that myth of heart disease I suppose," says Smith/

But when the eggs don't turn out right?

"You just have to throw them away, or start over," he says.

The Eggstractor, as seen on TV and online, is supposed to save those hard boiled eggs, because it peels them for you.

"If it makes life easier I'm going to talk to my boss about getting one," says a hopeful Smith.

So we tried it out. We carefully took out its two pieces - the accordion looking part, and the base, and followed, what they call the Eggstructions.

First, we boiled the eggs, just as they say. Cover them with water, add some salt, bring them to a boil and wait six to eight minutes.

Then drain the hot water, add ice, and cold water, waiting another ten minutes.

So did it work?

"I'm not impressed," says Smith

So Kurtis gives it a try – no go.

Back to the Eggstructions. It also offers up a troubleshooting guide.

Better cracking and less force. We try again. No success.

Here's mike's advice for anyone who sees the late night infomercial.

"Put down your beer and go to bed, because it's not worth buying," he says.
