Buy It And Try It: The Speed Sensor

Ah, baseball, America's pastime. And here in Sacramento, the boys of summer at Sac City Community College are building on an already great baseball tradition.

Clearly the Sac City Panthers take their baseball seriously, and for the pitcher, that means throwin' the heater!

And the coaches can clock just how fast the "heater" is with a big menacing looking radar gun. They can cost a ball club any where from a $100 to, gulp, over a thousand! But say, that's over the salary cap! Enter…the Speed Sensor.

It's a baseball with a digital read out that claims it can clock your toss up to 120 miles an hour! But right "off the bat" it's a little confusing.

Finally we get it going, but first pitch-- foul ball!

So we go to the bullpen with instructions to warm up again. Seems our distance is off, so we measure with the included baseline. And the coach winds up again, "Got it within 4 mph," says Kurtis.

So now it's time for the real test. But as soon as we bring on the heat, it brings out the glitches. So our pitchers say the Speed Sensor isn't reading. So the Panthers are sending it to the showers.

The Speed Sensor costs $28 and we bought it at amazon.com.
