Norovirus Suspected In Illnesses At Tuolumne County Camp

SONORA, Calif. (AP) -- Tuolumne County officials suspect norovirus was to blame for a spike in illnesses at a camp in the county run by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department.

Five people reported symptoms of the virus at Camp Mather last week. That's up from June, when just one or two new cases were logged a week.

Tuolumne County Public Health Officer Todd Stolp tells the San Francisco Chronicle test results to determine the exact cause of the illnesses could be available as soon as Wednesday.

Most of the recent cases have been mild although a 2-year-old boy landed in the hospital after suffering a high fever, severe stomach cramps and sustained vomiting.

The nearby Tuolumne Camp, which is run by the City of Berkeley, was shut down over the weekend after about 75 people came down with norovirus.
