Suspicious Device In Truck Triggers Evacuations
RIO LINDA, Calif. (CBS13) – An Elk Grove teacher was briefly detained Sunday after homemade fireworks triggered a bomb scare and forced the closure of several Rio Linda streets.
Tow truck driver Eric Babcock said he hauled the red pickup truck to the fire station on the 6600 block of Rio Linda Boulevard Sunday morning after he spotted a suspicious device in the truck's bed.
"I thought it looked like somebody had a pyrotech's license or something," Babcock said. "There was something that didn't seem right."
The Sacramento County Sheriff's hazmat team responded to the scene to investigate the object, discovering what appeared to be homemade fireworks.
Rio Linda Boulevard and some neighboring streets were shut down for several hours Sunday afternoon until he object was safely detonated by explosives experts.
The owner of truck, Elk Grove High School chemistry teacher David Teberg, arrived at the scene while authorities were still investigating and was quickly detained by deputies. He was released after being questioned.
Teberg was forced to leave his truck behind Saturday night after being arrested in Placer County for alleged public intoxication. He is not facing any charges in connection with Sunday's incident, according to authorities.
