Sacramento Hospital Has Record-Breaking Baby Boom

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CBS13) – Oh baby! A Sacramento hospital was hopping over the weekend breaking a record when it comes to newborns. And the baby boom may have something to do with the moon.

Since Friday, 50 babies have been born at Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento.

At times, doctors were delivering a baby about every half hour, according to hospital officials. Dr. Angela Rosas has been a pediatrician for 20 years and can't remember such a busy time.

"I don't think I've ever seen this many babies born at any hospital I've ever worked at," said Angela Rosas, M.D., OB Pediatrician. "There is a myth between pediatricians and obstetricians that more babies are born on a full moon.

Medical experts say the effect focuses on the moon's gravitational pull.

It controls a woman's body in the same way it affects the earth's tides.

The moon theory has not been scientifically proven. But officials at Sutter Memorial believe this is the highest number of babies born in 48 hours in the history of Sacramento.

There were so many women in labor at times there weren't enough delivery rooms.

Of course, there are other theories about the baby boom. The San Francisco Giants did win the World Series nine months ago. Perhaps there was a lot of celebrating going on.
