Modesto Police Department Loses One Of Their Own

MODESTO, Calif. (CBS13) – The Modesto Police department has lost one of their own due to an unexpected medical problem.

"Barry", a 6-year-old German Shepherd and Modesto Canine Officer, was put to sleep on Wednesday after a brief but serious illness.

Barry's partner, Officer Kalani Souza woke up Monday to find Barry unresponsive. Veterinarians believe he had suffered a series of seizures.  An MRI performed at the U.C. Davis Veterinary Hospital could not determine the cause.  While hospitalized, Barry came down with pneumonia.

Barry had been with the Modesto Police Department since 2006.  He made his most recent arrest last week by helping apprehend a wanted burglary suspect.
