Parking Study Released For Downtown Arena

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- Would you be willing to walk a half-mile to go to a Sacramento Kings game or a concert?

You might have to if the downtown sports and entertainment facility is built at the downtown railyards.

A parking study released Tuesday and presented to the City Council at its Tuesday night meeting shows that the arena would need an additional 1,500 to 1,800 premium parking spots, those defined as less than a quarter of a mile away from the new site. Nine hundred of those spots could come from a new parking garage off of 5th Street to support the new courthouse, but there's no indication of when that garage would be built.

According to the study, there are 17,433 parking spots within a half-mile of the proposed site, most of them in parking garages, but only 3,404 within a quarter-mile. The new arena would require about 6,000 parking spots.

Walking 15 minutes to get to a game might be too far for some fans.

"Not that far," responded Gregory Anderson when asked how far he'd trek to attend an event. "About five blocks maybe."

Mayor Kevin Johnson downplayed the issue.

"These are the natural things we wanted to discover and identify," Johnson said. "This is the natural part of the process any time you work on a major development."
