Mayor Johnson To Seek Second Term

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- Mayor Kevin Johnson made it official on Wednesday, announcing his plans to seek a second term in office.

Johnson made the announcement at the Capitol Academy charter school in Midtown.

"I'll stand on principle and fight for what I believe is best for the city, even if I ruffle a few feathers," said Johnson, who has taken heat from some critics for focusing so much attention on a new downtown arena at a time when Sacramento's unemployment rate has risen to more than 12 percent.

"I'll propose bold and innovative ideas, even if some think they're too big or too risky. And above all, I'll welcome the input and perspectives of all voices in our community, even from those who disagree."

Johnson said he would run an aggressive campaign, knocking on doors and holding a series of "listening sessions" in the next few months before unveiling an agenda for another term in office.

Johnson is the 55th mayor of Sacramento. He is the first native Sacramentan and the first African American to be elected to the office. He defeated incumbent Mayor Heather Fargo in 2008 by nearly 20,000 votes.
