School Stunned After Sophomore Dies Of Heart Attack

ELK GROVE (CBS13) -- The student body of Cosumnes Oaks High School is mourning the death of a fellow student who died early Thursday morning after suffering a heart attack days earlier.

Classmates said they knew 15-year-old Jurelle Davis had been hospitalized for two days after an asthma attack led to a heart attack at his home Monday, but the news that the sophomore died at 12:31 a.m. Thursday still proved to be a crushing blow for the campus.

Davis had passed a physical and played football despite his condition, making his death especially surprising, said coach Ryan Gomes. Even though he had to carry an inhaler, he didn't back down on the football field as a defensive back and proudly wore number 26 on his Wolfpack jersey.

"He was an undersized guy, a kid that played with a lot of heart," Gomes said

Davis' classmates already responded Thursday by wearing white ribbons in his honor and have begun planning a tribute for him at their homecoming game Friday. Cosumnes Oaks players will present the student's family with his jersey.

A Facebook memorial page in Davis' honor has already gained more than 1,000 supporters by Thursday evening.
