UPDATE: ATF Investigation Involves Multiple Agencies

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) –- Officers from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department and Roseville Police Department have been placed on leave during a federal investigation that also involves other area agencies.

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says it is in the middle of a case that invovles possible illegal gun sales.

The Roseville Police Department confirmed with CBS13's Koula Gianulias on Friday that one of its officers was put on administrative leave on Thursday as a result of the probe. The sheriff's department also confirmed some of its officers were put on leave Thursday, although it didn't specify how many.

A Sacramento Police spokeswoman said his agency is cooperating with the investigation, but it wasn't immediately clear if any of that agency's officers are part of the probe. The Sacramento Bee reported that one Sac PD officer and one CHP officer are also part of the investigation.

"The investigation is being handled by ATF," Sacramento Police spokesman Sgt. Andrew Pettit said. "We are not authorized to speak on behalf of their investigation."

The ATF confirmed it served search warrants in the cases on Thursday.

On Friday, Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones issued a statement acknowledging that some of his deputies are being investigated.

"I can confirm that deputies from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department are involved in an ongoing ATF investigation, and that the deputies have been placed on administrative leave pending its outcome," he said in the statement. "I have been aware and kept fully apprised of this investigation since its inception, and sheriff's detectives from the ATF's 'Project Safe Neighborhoods Task Force' have participated in the investigation.

"Because this is an ongoing federal investigation, ATF has asked that I not comment publicly about the nature of the investigation, charges, or potential outcomes," he said. "Further, since these are personnel matters, I will not be able to disclose as much information as I would like to.

"At the appropriate time, I will more fully discuss all relevant information that I am able to."

No arrests have been made but indictments could be coming soon.

A Folsom Police spokesperson told CBS13 no officers from that agency are being investigated.
