Drowned Cat Found With Dumbbell Around Neck

REDWOOD CITY (AP) -- A reward is being offered for information leading to the person who tied a dumbbell to a cat's neck and left it in the water to drown.

Redwood City public works employees spotted the cat's corpse in a lagoon this week. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that a 5-pound weight was found attached to the cat's neck with zip ties.

Peninsula Humane Society spokesman Sean Delucchi says the water was shallow enough for the cat's toes to touch and that the animal likely struggled.

The 12-year-old cat did not have a collar but was declawed, suggesting it had been someone's pet at one time.

The Humane Society is offering a $2,250 reward in hopes of finding the culprit, who could face felony animal cruelty charges.
