Occupy Oakland Protesters Served Eviction Notices

OAKLAND (AP) — Oakland police are serving anti-Wall Street protesters with written notice that they must disband their camp immediately.

Officers distributed fliers to protesters late Friday afternoon warning that the camp violates the law.

The notice says the city and police support free speech and the right to assemble but that the camp itself is illegal.

Protesters are warned they will face arrest if they don't remove all camping materials.

The notices came about 24 hours after a man was shot and killed near the Oakland camp. Protesters said he had no connection to the camp. Police are continuing to investigate.

The shooting increased pressure on Oakland Mayor Jean Quan to close the camp.

As the notices were handed out, many protesters gathered for what they called a march against police brutality.
