Vallejo Officer Gunned Down During Pursuit

VALLEJO (CBS13) – A highly decorated and experienced law enforcement officer died Thursday when gunfire erupted during a pursuit after a bank robbery.

Officer James Capoot, a 19-year veteran of the Vallejo Police Department, was part of the pursuit of at least one suspect after an armed robbery was reported at the Bank of America near Oakwood Road and Springs Road on Thursday afternoon.

The chase lasted for about three or four miles, according to Vallejo Police Sgt. Jim Bassett, before officers neutralized the suspect's vehicle with a PIT maneuver, spinning it out on the 100 block of Janice Street.

Authorities said at least one suspect fled the vehicle on foot, with Capoot closely pursuing him into residential backyards. Other officers who were trying to catch up with the chase said they heard at least two gunshots, and found Capoot mortally wounded.

Capoot did not fire his weapon, Bassett said. The officer was wearing ballistic body armor.

Other officers soon apprehended a suspect near the scene and launched a massive manhunt for a potential second suspect. The Vallejo Police Department said they are scaling back their search but have not eliminated the possibility that additional suspects are involved in either the bank robbery or the subsequent shooting.

Capoot was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries. The slain officer was described as a highly decorated officer who had received the Medal of Courage twice and often volunteered as a coach for youth basketball leagues. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.

The identity of the suspect in custody has not been released.
