Safety Helmet Saves Life Of Folsom Teen

FOLSOM (CBS13) – Police and firefighters say a safety helmet saved the life of a teenager when he was hit and pinned underneath a car Friday.

Folsom police say the 13-year-old boy was on a motorized scooter when he was hit by a car at the intersection of East Bidwell Street and Glenn Drive.

Emergency crews arrived to find the teen pinned under the vehicle. An air ambulance was originally called out because medical personnel believed his injuries were life threatening.

"He was actually pinned under the vehicle. It took us maybe five, six minutes to jack the vehicle up and remove him from underneath," said Folsom Fire Division Chief Calvin Howard.

Emergency crews freed the teen and discovered the teen's injuries were not as bad as originally thought. Firefighters say the teen was conscious when he was taken to the UC Davis Medical Center by ambulance.

Folsom Police also point out that while the teen was wearing a helmet, he should not have been riding the motorized scooter. By law, you must be 16-year-old with a valid Driver's License or Permit to operate a motorized scooter.
