San Jose Standoff With Machete-Wielding Man Ends In Arrest

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — San Jose police have arrested a man suspected of holing himself up in his apartment with a machete, prompting a five-hour standoff with police.

Police spokesman Jose Garcia says the unidentified 44-year-old man walked out of his apartment around 7:45 a.m. Thursday with a bottle of alcohol in his hands. He allegedly still refused to surrender until he was bitten by a police dog.

The standoff at the man's apartment began around 2:47 a.m. when police responded to reports that his music was loud and he was refusing to turn it down.

Police say at some point they saw the man pull out a machete. He allegedly turned up his music when police tried to talk to him on a public announcement system.

Residents of neighboring apartments were evacuated during the standoff.
