SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Another rash of manhole cover thefts in midtown Sacramento has forced city officials to spend thousands to replenish their dwindling supply of replacement lids.

Authorities said at least 18 of the metal covers were snatched overnight Thursday in addition to nearly 50 that were stolen last weekend. The sudden crime spree has nearly depleted the city’s supply of covers, delaying repairs and creating road hazards for drivers.

Sacramento has spent at least $57,000 on replacement lids in the past six months. Each manhole cover fetches about $11 when sold for scrap.

Three detectives have now been assigned to investigate metal and copper thefts in the area.

      Cardboard would be even cheaper.

My hubby went to dump a major load and discovered someone stole his manhole ARGHHHH

Manhole covers need to be harder to steal. A lot of utility hole covers come equipped with a special head bolt to prevent unauthorized access. Surely , for $50,000, a bolt with a spring arrangement to allow for heavy traffic jostling could be retrofitted to Sacramento’s supply of lids.

I see a regular hex bolt long enough to delay hand removal, which city access crews could easily remove with the appropriate socket and power tool.

While vacationing in Monaco, we were fortunate enough to catch the races.
Officials had the manhole covers tack welded to prevent the F1 series cars from lifting the covers as they passed over them approaching 175 MPH.
Take a lesson from Monaco Sacramento. Tack weld the covers.

Sounds like the perect solution Deuce I hope they do that before a child or animal falls in one of those holes or someone breaks a leg etc those holes are , really very dangerous

  5. Eric says:

They could always go after the recyclers for accepting them. If someone shows up with manhole covers and rolls of copper and look homeless it should tell you the stuff is probably stolen.

    1. Thomas says:

      Looking homeless?

  6. John says:

Eric has it right: Hammer the recyclers! They’re the ones who are behind all these thefts.

  7. Dave says:

What’s the big deal? We hhave potholes bigger than that. Nobody cares about them, they just put out a sign saying “Rough Road”.

    1. rmcsticks says:

How would you like to hit one with a motorcycle ? It would kill you.

    2. trollbeads says:

Hey Ive seen that sign somewhere, on yea on the back of your girlfriend!!

  8. gna says:

I have no sympathy for the city as this is an easy crime to stop. . . .

  9. Nappy 49er says:

I bet anybody they are probably using a panel van with a hole cut in the floor and parking over the manhole cover. Nobody would see a thing.

  10. nothingchanges says:

Put some spot weld’s on the cover’s…wow that was easy !

  11. DAVE ROSS says:

MAYBE THE STATE CODE NEEDS TO BE UPDATED TO REQUIRE AN ADDRESS AND FINGERPRINTS FROM THOSE SELLING TO RECYCLERS. CURRENTLY THE LAW REQUIRES RECYCLERS TO WAIT 3 DAYS TO PAY. SOME STATES ARE ADDING THE PROVISION THAT THE PAYMENT IS TO BE MAILED TO THE ADDRESS PROVIDED BY CUSTOMER. SOMEDAY ALL MANHOLES WILL BE LOCKED MAKING IT SAFER FOR ALL.
