Abandoned Horse Dies After Eating A Poisonous Plant

EL DORADO HILLS (CBS13) - A starving horse found abandoned last week on Sacramento County land has died.

The Grace Foundation took in the two-year-old mare named Freebird, and tried to nurse her back to health.

But the veterinarian discovered she had been poisoned from eating Star Thistle which horses only eat when they're starving.

The invasive plant caused the horse to suffer permanent neurological problems.

Donations that were made in Freebird's name will now go to help other horses.
