Puppy Recovering After Being Run Over

LODI (CBS13) - A car hit a puppy and drove off, but who drove up next made sure she would survive.

A Lodi police detective driving on a DUI patrol happened see the dog get hit. Instead of going after the car, Detective Eric Bradley hit the brakes. When he first walked up he saw the dog covered in blood and thought she might be dead.

"And I touched it and its eyes started to roll and it moved a little," said Det. Bradley.

That puppy came into the clinic as a number, but she'll leave with a name.

"Since it was St. Patrick's Day, I was looking for an Irish name and came up with Fiona, which means beautiful in old Irish," said Bradley.

She sure is beautiful. Only the 16-week-old terrier mix now has a fractured pelvis to deal with.

"She also has a fracture right here," said Nurse Jennifer Marchi, pointing at an x-ray.

She also has an appetite -- a good sign for her recovery.

"She has feeling in her back legs. Her tail still wags. She can get up and turn," said Marchi.

After a week of cage rest and pain pills, Fiona should be feeling a whole lot better. And so will Detective Bradley, the tough cop with a soft spot for four-legged friends.

"I have five dogs so dogs are a big part of my life," said Bradley.

Is the detective about to have six dogs?

"Unfortunately for Fiona, Lodi city law won't let you have more than five," said Bradley. "As an officer of the law, I will abide by the law, as much as I would love to take her."

People assisting the Lodi shelter are taking care of Fiona's medical bills.
