Emergency crews say Hu fell into a deep hole created by an underflow of water.

Hu joined Caltrans in 1998 where he was currently a Senior Bridge Engineer.

"It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of our Caltrans' family member, Yiwei Hu at the age of 54," said in a release from Caltrans officials. "Yiwei was an avid outdoors man who enjoyed skiing, mountain climbing, scuba diving and most recently, golf. He is survived by his wife Connie Lau and his children Annie and Brian."

Caltrans said they are setting up counseling sessions for Hu's co-workers. Funeral services are still being arranged.
