Modesto Homeowner: Man Found Dead In Garage Broke In, Started Fire

MODESTO (CBS13) - Police in Modesto are investigating a deadly fire at a Modesto residence as arson. They also say signs of a burglary were found inside the home.

Firefighters were called to the 1700 block of Judy Court at around 10:40 p.m. Friday to investigate reports of smoke. When they arrived, fire crews discovered a fire in one of the bedrooms, and during a subsequent search of the home, firefighters discovered an unconscious man who does not live at the home, say police.

The man was taken outside where firefighters began lifesaving measures. He was then taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. Investigators were able to identify the man, but have not released his identity until his next-of-kin is notified.

Evidence at the scene indicated the fire was intentional and that the home had been burglarized, say police.

The homeowner tells CBS13 that the man found in the residence broke in while no one was home and took a shower. He then collected flammable liquids and started the fire in a bedroom.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Structure loss is estimated at $50,000 while content loss is estimated at $25,000.
